Baby Vader

Again this is an exercise to practice drawing on my wacom tablet & colouring in Photoshop. I'd seen a kid's drawing of Darth Vader & loved the simple shapes they'd used to make up his face so I tried to do a really simplified version and include some elements that a toddler would have that would fit into the star wars universe...like a teddy bear ewok!
I have an idea for doing a few panels showing why Vader had such a chip on his shoulder when he grew up!

Life Drawing

Went to the City Life Drawing in the Grand Social last night. This is what I drawed.
I was happy with most of them for a change, normally life drawing can be pretty throwaway stuff. Still can't draw feet properly though!

Picture Show window vinyl

New post, old stuff! This is from the Tinderbox Picture Show exhibition from last year, we were going to get it professionally done & installed but they were looking to charge us an extortionate €130 for something half this size, so I did it my self with some sheets of vinyl & a pair of scissors for a total cost of €7!
Really glad I did in the end cos not only was it a fraction of the price but the handcut nature gave the letters a lot more character & quirk.

Thanks to the other Tinderboxers who helped me cut it all out and stick it up straight!

Brian Vogon

Farewell to our all-powerful and omnipotent overlord...even though he's still going to hang around for another couple of months...
He always reminded me of the Vogons from Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy...lips especially

Pelican Briefs

This popped into my head the other day, I don't know why. Another excuse to experiment with textures & give it a vintage screenprinted feel.

Kingfisher Take II

I was messing about adding different textures to different parts of the illustration to see how it would look. I think the dappling of the dark blue and the light woodgrain texture in the cyan sections work well in suggesting feathers. I also changed the background to more of a riverside hue but kept it dark so the orange & blue really standout. It's amazing how much some texture can really lift a flat illustration!

Kingfisher

Here's a minimalist, geometric-ish, illustration of a kingfisher to add to my aviary. Going to try a papercut collage version of this too.

Typocard

I tried a more typographic design for my flatmate's birthday based on the style of Julene Harrison, which gave me a chance to do a jumble of decorative hand drawn type.
